R.I.P. XII Challenge

With triple digit heat, it doesn’t feel much like fall in my neck of the woods. And yet, the calendar says that on September 22, Autumn will officially begin.  And that means that the RIP challenge (R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril ) is back, hosted in this year by Andi at Estella’s Revenge and Heather at My Capricious Life

I participated last year for the first time and enjoyed the excuse to get to some of the spookier books on my to-be-read list.   I am again signing up for Peril the Second, which requires me to read only two books that fit in any of the following genres: mystery, suspense, thriller, dark fantasy, Gothic, horror or supernatural.

This may change, but I plan on reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane  (I’ve not seen the film BUT somehow, somewhere the “twist” ending was spoiled for me but hopefully I will like the book anyway)and Bird Box by Josh Malerman,  which is supposed to be creepy as all get out.

There is also a group read planned for Slade House by David Mitchell which I might read as well, since I also have a copy and I have really enjoyed everything else I have read by Mitchell.  We'll see if I manage it.

Are any of you taking part in the RIP XII or do you have any seasonal reads on deck for the fall months?

  1. This is such a fun challenge; I've done it once before and probably should do it again this year, but sometimes I'd rather not have to worry about linking up posts and adding buttons to my page. (Cause I'm lazy.) :D

  2. I'll probably be reading more than one spooky book this fall...it's about this time of year, when the temperature finally cools and the colors start changing that I start craving ghost stories and eerie gothic mysteries. I'll let you know if I stumble on any really good ones. :D

  3. Love this challenge myself! I'm eager to hear how you like Shutter Island--I haven't seen the movie either and don't really know anything about it, but it appeals.

Enjoy the challenge and hopefully the weather will cool off soon!

    Happy September reading...

    1. Thanks Jane! Yes, you have an impressive list of mysteries to choose from in your post! I am curious to see what you end up reading.

I hope Shutter Island is good. I have read mysteries by Lehane before (Gone, Baby Gone and Mystic River) and they were both very good, but rather bleak!

  4. I really, really liked Bird Box, hope you enjoy it as well! Really good creepy in that one. Slade House was interesting, but didn't quite creep me out as much as I would have liked. Will be interested to hear all the opinions about it during the group read!

Put up my tbr list over here if yer interested: http://www.bookpunks.com/peril-12th-season-horror-arrived/

    1. Thanks for the comment Nikki! I will check out your TBR forthwith!

I am looking forward to giving Bird Box a whirl. And it is short! Hopefully I will be able to polish it of in one (dark) evening.

  5. I'm not consciously doing RIP this year, too many other challenges and events going on. But I should look to see if I have any appropriate books on my TBR shelf.

    1. Thanks for the comment Lory! I don't think I read "seasonally" with this one exception. There is something appropriate in my mind to reading spooky stuff near Halloween.

  6. YAY on Slade House! I am only starting it today because I mis-read the dates and thought everyone was supposed to start it ON Oct 1st and now I'm seeing everyone is already done. :(
