But I have read Cross Creek by Rawlings and really enjoyed it, if you are interested in her life in rural Florida it's very interesting and beautifully written. You describe this book so well and very true that as children we are going to get something different from books like the Yearling, Little House on the Prairie etc than what we take away as adults. I must put this book on my list.Kathy's Cornerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03967595794483824444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927098956199060247.post-28092468087672338562017-07-31T15:14:11.687-07:002017-07-31T15:14:11.687-07:00Thanks for the comment Jane! Yes, this classic just melds in to all my childhood memories of books/movies about children and animals (Where the Red Fern Grows, Sounder, Old Yeller, etc.)...but whether I actually read it or not? Who knows?

I hope you do enjoy it if and when you (re)read it and that you find it as meaningful and as immersive as I did. I have a feeling I read it once, but that was so long ago it doesn't really count.

>Reading The Yearling gave me the same sort of satisfaction as an adult that I had as a child reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books, that sense of a completely different time and place that you could jump into anytime you opened the pages.

Wow, that is great articulation of an incredible feeling and one that keeps me reading book after book!

>The book is pretty clear in its message that neighbors are mandatory for survival and that subsistence farming is hard and precarious work.

I like that too--yes, time to read this classic.JaneGShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11094501834387622997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927098956199060247.post-53676104940435492072017-07-30T09:31:54.150-07:002017-07-30T09:31:54.150-07:00Thanks for the comment Carol! Maybe it was because her use of it was so consistent? And the rest of the narration, in third person, was in Standard English. I also wasn't sure if it was a children's classic so was pleased to read your review & be educated. Dialect usually annoys me in books also. I used an audiobook to listen to Tom Sawyer which was very helpful as well as entertaining. Interesting that it didn't bother you in this book.Carolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820925595506920754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-927098956199060247.post-14891963687673392232017-07-26T11:38:31.142-07:002017-07-26T11:38:31.142-07:00Thanks for the comment Lark!
